PAPATOETOE DISTRICT.
A financial statement placed before the Papatoetoe Town' Board last evening by the clerk, Mr. William Young, showed that the general account had a credit balance of £1204, and the credit in the loan account was £7430, which, with £7100 on fixed deposit, made a total of £14,530. A vote of condolence was passed to the relatives of the late Mr. George Hosking. ~,.,, •, t Bonfires were being lighted by residents in many cases without permits, reported the fire brigade superintendent, Mr. G-. Bradley, and careful supervision would be required in the dry weather, lhe clerk stated residents were generally aware ot the '.by-law requirements, and permission was often obtained by telephone. Mr. Bradley asked the board to support his request for a continuous telephone service for the fire brigade. The chairman replied that a canvass was being made ot the district, and it was expected the hours of'the Papatoetoe exchange would be extended'within a short time for the benefit of all subscribers. Reference was made to the fire brigade s visit to Otahuhu on September 10, and the chairman of the fire committee (Mr. E. • S. Soreneon), submitted that the brigade should confine its activities to the Papatoetoe fire district, which ended one mile beyond the town boundary, unless a request for assistance were received from adjoining districts. A recommendation to this effect was adopted. — Letters were received from the Prime Minister and the Minister o£ Public Works, stating that the board's request to the Main Highways Board for a contribution of a proportion of the interest and sinking fund oii the loan of £6000 ill connection with «ie Great South Road concreting was being given consideration. Authority was given the Papatoetoe Band to hold a grand opening gala day of a proposed band rotunda on the reserve at the rear of the Town Hall on Saturday, December 14. Suggestions before the band commence were that the opening take the form of a garden fete and children's sports, and that the band hold a concert in aid of a week's oour toward the rotunda, which would provide funds for the building scheme. Opinion that the erection of a central office by the Auckland Power Board for Papatoetoe and surrounding districts would have a beneficial effect on business done in the district was expressed by the Papatoetoe Chamber of Commerce, in a letter asking the board to obtain a definite 'statement from the Power Board as to when the local offices would be erected.
