ARRESTED on leaving gaol,

When William Thomas Youldcn walked out of Mount Eden prison this morning after serving a three months' sentence lor unlawful conversion of a motor car, he was met by Detective Sneddon, who arrested hi:::. Later Youldcn appeared at the Police Court on a pcculiarlv-worded charge. This was as follows: "On May 21, 1929, beinf a person the date of whose arrival was°eariier than two years after the termination of imprisonment suffered by him in respect of an offence, which, if committed in New Zealand would be punishable by imprisonment for two years or upwards, not being a mere political offence and 110 pardon having been t;anted, did land in New Zealand." = The Collector of Customs, Mr. J. Mcintosh, who prosecuted, said Youlden, 011 August 7, 1925. was sentenced to twelve months' imprisonment at Adelaide, Australia, for attempted larceny from the person. He came to New Zealand on May 21 last under the name of Thomas, and shortly afterwards unlawfully converted a motor car, which earned him a sentence of three months' imprisonment. Because of his arrival here in May he came within the Immigration Restriction Act and was therefore a prohibited immigrant. Mr. Mcintosh asked for an order to deport Youlden to Australia. "I know the police will object to it, but could I have bail?" asked Youlden. He told the magistrate that he intended going to Australia on his own accord, and 'asked if he could have his liberty until the boat sailed. Mr. F. K. Hunt. S.M.: You have got a very bad list. I think yon will be safer inside until the boat sails. Bail was refused.
