GLARING HEADLIGHTS.
DEFECTIVE LAMPS. ATTEMPT AT REMEDY. GOOD WORK OF THE A.A.A. (By W.A.W.) The inconveienae and positive danger of dazzling headlamps is always more j noticeable in the winter months. Few motorists realise that a proportion of this nuisance is due to carelessness on j their part, and can be cured with little difficulty. . The trouble is largely due to incorrect focussing of the lamps. Often the bulbs are such that tie light spreads instead of making a compact beam which can be controlled. Most head lamps have some form of focussing, which can be altered by moving the lamp in the bayonet catch on the bulb. A few experiment in the dark will soon show what can be done in this direction by moving the bulb to different positions to get a compact beam. This may still be too high to comply with the regula- : tions, which it is understood are to be enforced at no distant date. A slight ! tilting of the lamp would remedy this, j! if motorists are at all dubious of their j ability to correct their lamps they should I not lose the opportunity which the Auck- | land Automobile Association is offering J to members of having their headlights ' tested and the faults pointed out by a • competent man who is in attendance | j every day this week at Cadman's !| :■ Garage, Grey Avenue, from 8.30 a.m. to j 5.30 p.m. j j' That some steps will be taken by the I proper, authorities to ensure motorists i complying with tlie regulations is as- L sural; The by-law on this subject j|! from the Motor Vehicles Act of 1928 II leads as follows:—"Adjustment of head- f lights Every headlight attached to a | motor vehicle shall be so focussed and j ■idjlisted that when the vehicle is standing on a horizontal surface the main beam of light is not projected above the horizontal plane of the lamp, nor projected to a height which at a distance of 75ft from the lamp is more than 3ft j (Jin above such horizontal surface."
