"CIGARETTE MONEY."
TROTTING TRAINER'S HELPER
CLAIM FOR WAGES SUCCEEDS
EMPLOYMENT AT EPSOM.
"The only money he paid me all the time I worked for him was 5/, which he said would get me cigarettes to see me over the week-end," said William Ker at thi) Magistrate's Court this mornin°", when claiming from Andrew Bryce £45 for wages he alleged were due to him. Both Kei and Bryce are trainers of trotting horses. In evidence Ker said that he was employed by Bryce at Epsom from March 20 of last year till July 3. Bryce then had six horses, D'Artagnan, Nut Hinton, Lochade, Gold Rain, Landlord and Loid j\linto in "the stable. He asked for £3 a week, because Brvce had previously been paying £2 a week to another, who only put in part of his time with Bryce. Not only had he received no wages, but he had taken a horse for Bryce to a meeting at Cambridge and had paid his own fare. He was under the impression Bryce had monev and the wages could be got at any" time, and having backed a few winners he had not asked for his wages. Before being employed by Bryce he had not trained trotters. He denied doing work for others during the time he was with defendant.
The defendant, in -evidence, said that he had only three horses in work when Ker joined him. He did not employ Ker, but it was the latter's wish that he should b2 allowed to assist in order to gain experience. Ker had asked to be allowed to take the horse to the Cambridge meeting, as it was his own wish to be at the meeting. No mention was made of wages until a couple of months after he (Bryce) had gone back to Christehureh. i
Two witnesses gave evidence that Ker had done other work during the "time he was with Bryce.
His Worship (Mr. E. C. Cutten) said the evidence for the defence was not satisfactory, and he gave judgment for plaintiff for £32. Mr. Waddin- hani appeared for plaintiff and Mr. Smythe for defendant.
