LUMINOUS POLES.
SAFEGUARD TO MOTORISTS.
TRANSPORT BOARD'S DECISION.
Owing to the increasing number of fatal and other accidents caused by centre poles, the Auckland Automobile Association asked the Auckland Transport Board to-day to proceed immediately with their removal. As far as possible the board will give effect to the request of the association.
Until the work was completed the association suggested that all the poles now in the centre of the road should at once be painted with a luminous paint to the height of six feet from tileground.
"The centre poles do not cause the accidents any more than do standing vehicles or poles on the side of the road." commented Mr. J. A. C. Allum, the chairman. He added that it was proper for the board to give effect to the request, and moved accordingly. Mr. E. H. Potter agreed the poles were a source of considerable danger. "Some of the accidents are caused by the. drivers seeing three or four poles instead of one," said Sir. M. J. Covle, amid laughter.
