WOMAN BEFORE COURT.
SUPPRESSION OF NAME £ REFUSED.
"WE WANT PUBLIC TO KNOW."
A well dressed woman, Cecilia May Wilkes, aged 48, came before Mr. F. it. Hunt, S.M., at the Police Court this morning on a charge of wilfully detaining a registered letter containing five £1 notes and a 5/ postal note, the property of the Postmaster-General, at Ohura on March 14.
On the application of Chief Detective Hammond, accused was remanded to appear at Taumarunui on September 6. Bail was allowed.
Mr. Rice, who appeared for accused, asked that her name should be suppressed.
"Why should it be suppressed? Everyone who comes up here will expect the same thing," said the magistrate. Mr. Rice said the woman had a good defence to the charge. "Oh, no, I will not make an order for suppression in this case. If she lias a good answer she can giv.£ it at Taumarunui. W c want the public to know that the detaining of letters is wronc," said Mr. Hunt.
