"LED BY SQUATTERS." small: farmers dissent. "NOT GREATLY AFFECTED." BUDGET PROPOSALS APPROVED. ? (By Telegraph.—Spccial to ''Star.") STRATFORD, this day. , That small farmers ! are being led by • wealthy landowners, in regard to-resolu- • tions passed opposing the Government • land supertax proposals, was the opinion expressed by Mr. H. A. Hunt, secretary of the Stratford Farmers' Union, which, at a meeting decided to support the Government in its proposals. ' Mr. Hunt declared that small farmers would not be greatly atfected by • the proposals. The chairman, Mr. H. J. Marchant, supporting Mr. Hunt, said the agitation was coming from districts where there were squatters who would be called upon to contribute their just share to taxation. Mr. X. B. Fryday stated that New Zealanders who fought in the war had fought for the holders of big estates, and the latter should be compelled to contribute equitably towards the war debt. After some further discussion it was decided, to support the tax, as a temporary measure.
