ASIATIC PERIL.

PROBLEM FOR EUROPEANS. HALF-CASTES REDUCE LONGEVITY. SERIOUS EUGENIC QUESTION. The Asiatic intrusion is not. one that concerns the Maori people alone. It is a matter of racial purity sufficiently grave to deserve the close consideration of all Europeans, according to a wellknown Auckland citizen to-day, when referring to action being taken by native people. He said there were many good reasons why thoughtful people should feel, alarmed at the presence in the Dominion of so many Chinese and Hindus. "We have to remember that the average longevity of these Asiatics is slightly less than thirty years, but they marry at an early age and are very prolific. The half-castes produced by unions with either white or Maori women are therefore, according to European standards, a degenerate type of humanity. Personally I know of one girl married to a Chinese who has seven children all with pronounced Asiatic traits, and up till recently the mother has been receiving charitable aid.

"We have already a population of 3000 Asiatics and the consequences of their social mingling are very apparent. It does not seem to occur to parents and the present generation that the permeation of communities with half-castes is not only most undesirable at' present, but a danger to the European and Maori girls of the future. This eugenic problem should be faced courageously, as further reinforcement of the Asiatic people in the country tends only to aggravate the position."
