A SEAMAN ARRESTED.

ARGUMENT ABOUT TRAWLERS FINED FOR ASSAULT.' There was a bit of bother at Cook's corner, Victoria Street, about 6 o'clock last night, resulting in the arrest of Murdo Mcßae (27), a seaman on a charge of assaulting James Henry Nicol. Mcßae denied the charge at the Police Court this morning. One witness said he was standing on the footpath speaking to a friend, when accused struck his friend. Witness asked accused to stop, when, he alleged, Mcßae drew a knife. "I got in first and we rolled over on the footpath._ Then a constable came along," said witness. Constable Mathew said he saw accused struggling with Nichol. Constable Whitehead, who assisted the other policeman to arrest accused, stated that Mcßae resisted and tried to break away to again strike Nicol. Accused had no knife. It was closed up in his pocket. Mcßae, in evidence, said an argument took place concerning the trawling dispute. Nicol asked him for his union book. Witness showed it, but refused to hand it to the complainant. He denied that he took the knife out of his pocket. When the magistrate intimated that he would convict accused, Sub-Inspector McCarthy mentioned that Mcßae had been nine times before the Police Court since last January. Mr; Hunt fined Mcßae £2 or seven days in gaol. ___
