FINALE OF TRENTHAM CARNIVAL.
SECOND LEG OF BIG JUMPING DOUBLE MISTER GAMP FAVOURITE FOR WINTER HURDLES. With the third day s racing at Trentham to-morrow will conclude what is really, a full-dress rehearsal for the Grand National meeting at Riccarton next month. History of the turf in the Dominion shows ample evidence that the form at the Wellington fixture has frequently been of material assistance in solving the problem of the "Two Nationals." The Wellington double combines the Wellington Steeplechase and Winter Hurdles, and departs from the usual double-betting combinations in that instead of the two races being decided on the one, or succeeding days, the Steeplechase is run on the first and the Hurdles on the third day.
The first leg went to the Auckland-owned King's Guard on Wednesday, when he scored a narrow victory over Fabriano in the Wellington Steeplechase. It is now the Winter Hurdles that all interest centres in, and the general opinion is that Mister Gamp, who scored such an easy win in the Great Northern Hurdles at Ellerslie, will add to his attractive record. In the Trentham Hurdles on Wednesday he was beaten into second place by Overhaul, but to-morrow the journey to be travelled extends to half a mile further, and this it is considered will be to the advantage of Mister Gamp.
