Fields For Third Day Of Winter

Meeting.

More than usual interest is being taken in the concluding day's sport at Trentham to-morrow, when the third round of the Wellington Racing Club's winter meeting will be staged.

Backers will first be called upon to solve the Talavera Hurdles, for which there is a fair field. On the form shown so far at the meeting Amorist and Horomea, who head the handicap, are both winners, and though they have substantial rises in weight they are bound to get support as each won in attractive style. Thurnbell was placed at the Hawke's Bay meeting and is credited with being a useful sort. This will be hi* first start at Trentham over hurdles. Modern and Fine Acre have proved their ability to go; well over fences, and Waltzer lias as much pace, perhaps more, thai} anything in the race. He ran second to Horomea yesterday and the run may enable him to see out the mile and a-half to-morrow. Grand National and Glena Bay are possibilities. There is ample room for a surprise, but the chances are that backers will sum up in favour of HOROMEA WALTZER THURNBELL. The Novice. With 14 accepted for in the Novice Handicap backers have plenty to pick and choose from. Those engaged have no outstanding form to recommend them. Justify went a good • race on the opening day to beat all hut Money Mint, and - being a fairly good beginner should be prominent all the ■way. Zarene is a smart sprinter when the company is not too good, a,nd she should be at home in this class. Juggle rin third on the first day over the same journey to Mark Mint and Havering, and Bonrose is whispered about as a likely one. When the tote bell ceases big money should be on

BONROSE, JUSTIFY, ZARENE. Crofton Handicap. With a big field in the Crofton Handicap, those who pick tlie winner will -be entitled to the dividend. Tlie top-weight, Havering, is very speedy, and at the meeting has run two seconds. Still 11.0 is a solid' burden. Maori Boy can master winter weights, but he does not appear to be very lucky, and invariably finds at least one in a race to beat him. Brilliant Light won nicely yesterday, and is bound to have friends. Balloon acted as runner-up to Brilliant Light, and now meets the latter * 51b better. Shortly can go fairly fast, and was second in the Trial Plate to Hopwood. High Society has shown form recently, and Justify, if reserved for this race, should go well. Good backing will be accorded SHORTLY MAORI BOY . BALLOON. Winter Hurdles. The Winter Hurdles has been dealt with frequently since the appearance of the weights, and there is no doubt that Mister Gamp will be a strong favourite. He. was beaten by Overhaul on Wednesday in the Trentham Hurdles, but the journey to-morrow is a-half mile further, and this should be in favour of Mister Gamp, who is a good stayer. Red Fuchsia was not placed on the first day, and in his Ellerslie engagements at the Northern meeting he fell each time. Comical, on recent form, cannot be regarded as a winner. Locarno is a good hurdler but has not been racing in recent weeks, and Glengariff find the distance a little beyond him. King s Guard won the Wellington Steeplechase, and is also quite at home over the smaller obstacles. Home Made did not show up in the Trentham Hurdles, but Aberfeldy, although beaten on the opening day, is likely to play a prominent part in the finish Overhaul won well on Wednesday and is regarded as a most promising horse, and with his light weight should stay on. The chance? are backers will go for MISTER GAMP KING'S GUARD ABERFELDY. Winter Oats. A very good field will line up for the Winter Oats, which looks particularly open. Several of those in the race, have been showing good form and at least a dozen look to possess a winning chance. High Pitch, who heads the list, is well able to master 10.0, and the distance, one mile, will suit him. Ruanui has a habit of winning in his turn, and Taboo is a solid sort who invariably pays b is in the winter.

TABOO " FAIRY HERALD KING'S JEST. July Steeplechase. Nothing stands out in the July Steeplechase unless it is Fabriano, who was only beaten a head by King's Guard in the Wellington Steeplechase. As he was out in front practically all the way Fabraino should take some heading oil at three miles. Kawini, although winning in his turn, seems to be a solid plodder, but a safe conveyance. Glendowie is apparently not yet at his best, and on recent form he could not be considered. Brigadier Bill has a chance, and of the others Matu and Radiate must bo considered. There is always the element of a surprise in a steeplechase, but there does seem to be encouragement this time for backers to go for FABRIANO. MATU; KAWINI. Onslow Handicap. The best sprinters will contest the Onslow Handicap, which is headed by the consistent and solid Black Duke, 11.5. Under welter conditions he is good. Kaiti won yesterday, and though suffering a substantial rise in weight, will have friends. Taboo, if started, will be strongly backed, but the Aucklanders, Billikins and Marble King, are fast over a sprint journey. A horse always liable to bring off a surprise is Oration. Most money may be found on TABOO KAITI BLACK DUKE. Kia Ora Handicap. The last opportunity backers will have of getting even will be when the field goes out for the Kia Ora Handicap. Several of those engaged will probably have raced earlier in the day. Hopwood won so well yesterday that he will carry good money again and the same applies to Mark Mint, who lias already won a double at the fixture. Bon Rose is a likely sort, and Mangaliaeri must be given a good chance. The others have very little to recommend them and the chances are backers will try to get their fare home from
