An old lady of TO, at Lower Hutt. realising her impotence in the face of the earthquake, fell upon her knees on the foothpath imploring Divine aid. An amusing incident in Wellington in connection with the earthquake was that the information branch at the telephone exchange was besieged by excited people, some of whom actually wanted to know what caused the earthquake.
