Strong views were expressed by members of the Thames County Council on the subject of ground which is locked up by mining syndicates which do nothing to develop it. The chairman, Mr. H. Lowe, said the council desired to help prospectors, but \ did not believe in allowing speculators to tie up large blocks. Mr. Courtney considered that any mine not working should have the rent reduced. - ' ; Several claims for reduction were deferred by the council.
