FELL FORTY FEET.
PRISON WARDER'S ESCAPE
TWO RIBS FRACTURED
(By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.)
RAETIHI, this day
While in charge of operations at a bridge which is being erected on the Makatote viaduct this morning, a war-der-instructor, A. Waters, of Waikune prison, had a narrow escape from death. He was standing on the bridge, when he missed his footing, and he fell to the rocks below, a distance of 40ft. He had to be lifted from his position by means of ropes. He was conveyed to Raetihi and found to have two ribs fractured and to be-badly bruised. He was also suffering from shock.
His escape from being killed outright is regarded as remarkable.
