RAILWAY EARNINGS.
NEW FINANCIAL YEAR.
NORTH ISLAND PROFIT LESS. (By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) WELLINGTON, Thursday. A working profit of £107,366 is shown by the Railways Department's working account for the first four weeks which ended on April 27, of the new financial year. The corresponding period last year gave a working profit of £130,221, but it included an Easter season, whereas this year all the passenger bookings at ecursion rates were made in the last week of March. The gross earnings were £618,417 and the expenses were £511,051. The working profit in the North Island was £45,253, a reduction of £26,000; that iv. the South Island £41,986, an increase of £7214. Net miscellaneous revenue declined by £4000 to £20,126.
