The autumn meeting of the Whangarei Racing Club was opened at Kensington Park to-day and will conclude 011 Saturday. The weather is perfect, and there is an exceptionally large attendance. The going is good. The defections in the Portland Handicap were British King, Brilliant Light, Kxalted and Paris Model, and Big Bertha ( .C4K-2), Sea Cob ( £47">) and Measurer ( ,t!2S(l) were backed in that order. Sea Cob was soon in front, followed by Measurer, Sunny Morn, Cay Cockade, and Big Bertha. The last-named had taken charge along the back, attend"d by Sea Cob and (lav Cockade, with Sunnv Morn, Palmares and Measurer heading the others. Sea Cob and Big "Bertha were 011 terms crossing the top, closely followed by (Jay Cockade. Once in a lino for home Sea Cob asserted himself and won comfortably by a length from (lay Cockade, with Palmares a head away. Bi;r Bertha was next, then camei Measurer, Merry Mason, Viburnum and Sunnv Morn.

Crossing the top Haviland was up with Camp Prince, with Cold Lily and Roman Pearl handy. Camp Prince drew out in the run home and pot the verdict by a length from ltoman Pearl, who finished well and beat Haviland for second place. (odd Lily was fourth, then came Land Measure. The I)an<ant, Cyniijue and North Hoy. Favourite Wins Big Event. Brandon. Sclioor, <;len»tar and Hakanoa were withdrawn from the Melniies Memorial Handicap, leaving a small lie Id of live to contest that event. The bracket, Lo Choucas and Ti Tree, was made favourite, carrying Ciit'i4, with Thui>bv ( C 372) and llipo ( £30!)) next in I demand. There was no alteration along the back a iid crossing t lie top Wenday and Ti Tree were shotting the way to Le Choucas and Thursby, and they turned for home iu that order, with Hipo last. Ti Tree tired in the run to the post and Le Choucas came through to win by a neck from Wenday, with Thursby a head away third. Ti Tree was next and Hipo la>t. Close Finish in Hurdles. All the acceptors went to the po.»t in the Northland Hurdles and the public made (.Klin (£.>79i first choice, with Ned Kelly (£453 i and the bracket. Just Quietly and Michael (£245 i, next in request. Colden Wedding was first out from Ned Kelly. Haylv Damon, lllingar and Michael. Odin fell at the fence at the top of the straight and Michael toppled over at the hurdle in front of the stand. Ned Kelly was left in charge and he led (iolden Wedding out of the straight, and along the back they were attended by .lust Quietly, lllingar and Bayly Damon. There was no change into the straight, where lllingar was pulled up. In a great finish Ned Kelly just lasted long enough fo beat < J olden Wedding by half a head, with Just Quietly two lengths away.
