LEARNING THE WAY.

TOUR FOR DRAINAGE ENGINEER.

AMERICA AND EUROPE.

TEMPORARY APPOINTMENTS MADE

Mr. H. H. Watkins, engineer-secretary to the Auckland and Suburban Drainage Board, is to leave Auckland by the Aorangi on May 7 on a six months' visit to America and Europe to investigate drainage schemes, in view of what is considered by his board "Tie apparent urgency of a comprehensive drainage scheme to provide for the proper discharge of sewage into the Waitemata and Manukau Harbours." The decision of the board is the outcome of an investigation made by Mr. L. B. Campbell, Government district engineer of Public Works, and Dr. H. Chesson and Dr. T. H. Hughes, health officers. These special investigating officers reported to the effect that on his return Mr. Watkins should design a scheme for the enlarged Auckland and Suburban Drainage district, knowing that the future operation of the system would bo his own responsibility. It could also be arranged that the engineer would act as consulting engineer to the suggested North Shore boroughs' board. While Mr. Watkins is absent, Mr. .1. P. Wright, assistant engineer, -will hold tho position of acting-engineer, and Mr. L. G. Ansell will hold the position oi acting-secretary.
