"SHOULD WAKE UP."
PEDESTRIANS AND TRAFFIC.
DANGERS OF QUEEN STREET.
QUESTION OF CONTROL
Aβ a result of a recent request by Mr. L. A. Eady that pedestrians crossing busy thoroughfares should have their crossing facilitated by the traffic department by adequate control, the chief traffic inspector, Mr. G. R. Hogan, reported on the matter to the City Council on Thursday evening. He said that to adequately enforce By-law No. 1 it would be necessary for white lines to be permanently placed on all intersections named in the by-law, and for additional officers to be appointed for the enforcement of the bylaw. For present requirements white lines would be sufficient, and he recommended that a by-law be framed to (1) compel pedestrians to cross all streets at right angles; (2) to provide that all intersecting streets in the main thoroughfares be used as pedestrian crossings and defined by white lines; (3) provide that prosecutions be taken against offenders after sufficient warning had been issued. The Legal and Finance Committee recommended that no action be taken, as, in their opinion, the traffic department's staff was exercising all the control necessary. Mr. J. Dempsey agreed with the recommendation of the committee, stating that to adopt the chief traffic officer's recommendation would be making the position impossible for pedestrians. "I think something should be done without irritating pedestrians," said Mr. J. A. C. Allum. Mr. E. Phelan supported Mr. Allum, adding that crossovers should be provided in Queen Street, which was a danger to pedestrians. "The whole thing is so vague. There is no suggestion as to what's to be done," said Mr. A. J. Entrican. "Pedestrians should wake up. Why, only tonight, as I was coming down to this meeting, a young lady ran right into Councillor Paterson's car—" Mr. Phelan: Ah, but look at the attraction the young lady had! (Laughter.) After further discussion, the matter was referred back to the committee.
