SERVICE RIFLE SHOOTING.
ARMY CHAMPIONSHIP. AN EXACTING TEST. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) TRENTHAM, this day. The final stage of the Army Rifle Shooting Championship is being fired today. After a cold night, beautiful weather with an absence of wind greeted the shootists when they went to the mounds this morning. At the conclusion of to-day's shoot the King's fifty will be known." This evening night firing with machine guns takes place. The teams taking part consist of four men with a leader, not above the rank of sergeant. Aiming is done by means of lamps placed at the foot of the target, and Verey lights are discharged into the air at intervals, the practice being most spectacular. Firing is by movement from 000 to 1000 yards, and 200 rounds are fired, the maximum being 400 points. The Army Championship call* fur sound physical condition. In addition to showing shooting ability, competitors have to start at GOO yards, run to odd yards and fire two shots in 4o second". repeating' the performance at 400 and ::00 yards and at 200 and 100 yanls. Competitors kneel at 200 yards and stand at 100 yards. The maximum points are 50. The test is most exacting and high scoring cannot be looked for. The machine gun teams match will h? fired during the d.iy for the Stafford Challenge Shield. This shield was presented by the townspeople of Stafford (England) to the New Zealand Rifle Brigade to commemorate the kindly feelings toward those New Zealauders who were stationed at Broxton Camp during the Great War. The trophy was donated for competition among infantry battalions. General Young, commanding officer, visited and inspected the camp to-day, witnessing a demonstration of the working mechanism of the new battle practice ground.
