FIRE IN PONSONBY SHOP.
LIVING QUARTERS DAMAGED.
Considerable damage was done to the living quarters of a grocery shop at 204, Ponsonby Road, occupied by Mr. A. E. Stuart, by a fine which broke out about ten o'clock last night. The stock in the shop, which was underneath, was damaged by water. The premises stand in a long block of wooden shops, most of which have dwellings shove them. Fearing (lint the flames might spread, some Chinese fruiterers, who occupy a shop four doors away in the same block, started to move their belongings to the other side of the road. Ten members of the Leys Institute. Boy Scout troop, six from the St. James' and a patrol lender from the Heme Bay troop, organised under a scout-master, formed a chain and saved a lot of the contents of Air. Stuart's premises.
The block was insured for £5000 with the Ocean office. The shop occupied bv Mr. Stuart was covered bv a policy for £1000.
