RACING NEWS.

WANGANUI JOCKEY CLUB. RAPINE LANDS THE CUP. THE RAIDER BEATS CIMABUE. STAR AREA PAYS ANOTHER GOOD PRICE. (By Telegraph.—Special to "Star.") WANGANUI, Thursday. The Wanganui. Jockey Club's autumn meeting opened to-day in disagreeable ■weather. There was no rain, but a gale of wind blew down the straight and made things unpleasant. The attendance- was satisfactory. The going was in good order, though on the hard side. Fields were mostly small, but qualfty was well represented, and the racing was of a highly interesting description, most of the finishes being very close. Though only six started in the Cup it was a splendid race, and was won in gallant style by Rapine. He went a great race and had to be hard ridden over the last six furlongs, but kept to his task like the game one he is and thoroughly deserved his win. Yoma's performance was also full of merit, as he was only beaten in the last few strides, and Laughing Prince made gallant efforts with his big weight. A feature of the day's racing was the success of horses trained by F. Tilley, for whom High Falutin', Glenartney and Freehold all won, while Cashier deadheated for second, and Laughing Prince ran third. Freehold and Glenartney are both owned by Mr. W. Duncan, whose luck had been out for some thne past. The sum of £25,812 was put through the machine, compared with £23,076 10/ last year, an increase of £2735 10/. The attendance was satisfactory, and giveii fine weather on Saturday the meeting should prove most successful from every point of view. High Falutin' Wins. There were eleven starters in the Maiden, Rangiutu being withdrawn. High Falutin' (£622) was made favourite, the most fancied of the others being Marica (£390), Endorse (£334) and Vaucluse. The quickest to begin was Endorse, and she quickly opened up a big gap from Marica, with High Falutin' and Naselle next in order. They were well strung out at the bend, Endorse being four lengths ahead, with Marica and High Falutin' as her nearest attendants. Endorse led into the straight by three lengths from High Falutin', and then followed Marica, Naselle and Vinella. Once straightened up for the Tun home High Falutin' closed up on Endorse, and going on won by nearly a length from the Paper Money mare, with Marica a length away third. Then came Vinella, Naselle and Sambur.

Favourite Beaten in Mile. Borsalene declined his engagement in the Stewards' Handicap, ten going to the post. Mendip (£666), Joy King (£515) and Keddar (£239), carried most money. Joy King was the early leader from Vigilance, Partaga and Keddar. As t'hey raced out of the straight Joy King was still leading, and at the six-furlong post had Hipo, Keddar and Partaga as his nearest attendants, Star Area being last. At the half-mile Hipo and Joy King were together in front, then came Partaga, Vigilance, Keddar, Avro and Mendip. As they raced into the straight Mendip ran into the lead, and was followed by Avro, Hipo, Joy King, Moutoa Treasury and Partaga, with Star Area closing up. In a great finish the lastnamed caught the leaders 100 yards from the post and got the verdict by a head from Moutoa Treasury, the latter beating Partaga by half*a length. Maui was fourth, Keddar fifth and Avro next. A Comfortable Win. Royal Acre was cut about at New Plymouth and this led to his withdrawal from the Westmere Hurdles. Elicit (£715) was a good favourite, Glengariff (£440) and Vexatious (£401) both being in fair demand. Harrowgate was left on the mark and took no part in the race. Roburant was first to show out, but Elicit led past the stand from Roburant, Vexatious, Diana's Lad, Vivo and Glengariff. Along the back Bonhomme ran up second, Elicit still being in the lead, and they were followed by Roburant, Vexatious and Diana's Lad. At the bend Glengariff began to overtake the leaders, but Elicit was well clear of Vexatious as they entered the straight, with Bonhomme just ah«ad of Olengariff. Elicit went on to win very comfortably by two length* from Glengariff. the latter beating Vexatious by a similar margin. Vivo was fourth, then came Bonhomme and Atareria. Mister Gamp Wins Well. Ten faced the starter in the Victory Hack, Cashier (£984), Roi de Val ( £658), and The Warden ( £363) being backed as named. The Warden went out as pacemaker, followed by Fallow, Green Acre and Volplane. At the six furlongs The Warden led from Fallow, then came Volplane, Green Acre, Balloon. Acred and Cashier. Crossing the top The Warden was in front, closely followed by Fallow and Green Acre, with Cashier and Mister Gamp next. Entering the straight The Warden had Green Acre as his nearest attendant, followed by Acred, Mister Gamp, Fallow and Cashier. In a good finish Mister Gamp got up to win by three parts of a length from Cashier and Gasnapper, who deadheated for second. Acred was fourth, and Green Acre next. Cashier was unlucky, as he was blocked when making his run in the straight. Roi de Val ran very disappointingly, finishing last. The Cup to Rapine. There were only six runners in the Cup, but it was a good quality field, and they all looked in fine fettle as they paraded. Laughing Prince stripped in great fettle, the veteran Rapine looked bright and well, while Yoma appeared all the better for his recent racing. Consequent on his splendid gallop yesterday morning Laughing Prince was greatly fancied, and he carried £1228, Yoma £711, and Rapine £649, the others being fairly well backed. Bright Glow went into the lead at the start from Yoma *nd Laughing Prince, with Rapine next. As they raced past the stand the order was Bright Glow, Hynanna, Home Made, Laughing Prince, with Rapine last. Bright Glow was going great guns three lengths ahead of Laughing Prince at the six furlong post, and then came Home Made and Hynanna, with Rapine still last, but slowly making up his leeway. At the half-mile Bright Glow had two lengths ead from Laughing Prince and Yoma, with Rapine driven along next. Hynanna dropping

hack to last. A- they crossed the toj> Yoma went up to Bright Glow, and Hapine ranged alongside Laughing Prince. Entering the straight Yoma was j piloting the field, followed by Bright | (•low, Laughing Prime and Rapine ou the. outer, together. Yoma hung on to his load, shaking off a challenge from Laughing Prince, but a hundred yards from the po>t Rapine put in hi* claim, and in a stirring finish lhe Martian gelding stayed on best to win a splendid race by a. neck from Yoma, with Laughing Prince two and a-half lengths away. Bright Glow was a good fourth, and Home Made next. with Hynanna some distance back, last. The first six furlongs were run in 1.18, the mile and a-quarter in 2.6, and the full distance in 3.0 3-5. They had to battle against a gale of wind in the straight, so the time registered was remarkably good. Rapine's victory was well received, and it undoubtedly was a fine performance for the veteran, whom R. Reed rode with line judgment. Glenartney Makes Good. The scratching of Royal Finance, Oral and Habit left six runers in the Juveuile Handicap. Glenartney ( £11«8), Becky Sharp ( £471) and Monaloff ( £347) were the most fancied. Becky Sharp did not begin well, the first to show out being Glenartney, followed by Crash and Courtlike. At the bend the favourite was going well in front from Courtlike, with Monalotf next, and they were well ahead of the other*. Glenartney was first to turn for home, followed by Monaloff and Courtlike. and they finished in that order, with Becky Sharp fourth and Alloy fifth. Freehold's Good Form. Seven went to the post for the Petre Hack, Freehold ( £857) being sorted out as the most likely winner, while Miss Hansom carried £820, and Lucky Bag £551. White Kinglet found her legs quickly, and led from Potency and Lucky Bag for a couple of furlongs. Then Lucky Bag took command, and led round the bend, where she dropped back, White Ringlet going to the front, but Miss Ransom closed up and she was up with White Ringlet as they entered the straight, with Potency next; then came Freehold, with Warrlame moving up. Miss Ransom took the lead, but Freehold and Warflame challenged, and the trio fought out a great finish, the favourite getting the verdict by a neck from War Flame, the latter being half a head in front of Miss Ransom, with Lucky Bag a length away fourth. The next to finish was Potency. The Raider all the Way. There were only six starters in the concluding event, the Flying Handicap. Lady Quex ( £1216) being entrusted with most money, with Lysander ( £855) and Cimabue ( £361) next in demand. The Raider began smartly, followed by Cimabue, Lady Quex and Vast Acre, with Lysander last. Lady Quex ran to the front as they crossed the top, with The Raider, Cimabue and Vast Acre next in order. Entering the straight The Raider was in command from Lady Quex, the latter being three lengths ahead of Cimabue. with Vast Acre handy. The Raider held off a challenge from Cimabue to win by a length, with Lady Quex a head away third, then came Gold Dawn, Lysander being last. The latter put no dash into his work at all.
