SOLDIER SETTLERS.
MAUNGATEPARTT DISTRICT. MORTGAGES AND RENTALS. (By Telegraph—Own Correspondent.) MORRINSVILLE, this day. Soldier settlers to the number of between 40 and r>o met Mr. F. Lye, M.P., and asked for his assistance in matters of general interest to the community. Mr. E. H. Hutchens presided. Messrs. J. H. Bishop, M. E. Barrowelough, and E. C. N. Robinson acted as spokesmen. One of the most important requests was that for assistance in having motgages of £7.~>0 which are held by the State on farms capitalised where there is sufficient security to warrant this being done, or at the option of the settler to place him on table mortgage over a period of years consistent with his lease. The speakers contended that it would bo unfair of the Government to ask for the arrears of rent postponed for terms of seven and ten years by the Valuation Board in 1920-21, when it was remembered that at that time the farms were not producing sufficient for living expenses. j)iMciiHsing the matter of abandoned farms, the spokesmen took exception to tho fact that new settlers who retcriantcd the farms were not oblibed to meet the arrears of rent that had been merely poutponed in tho cases of those fa.rmv.rn who hud battled on and ret, nirii'd their properties
