REVELRY AT POLE.

NEW YEAR WELCOMED.

"External Silence" Of Antarctic Regions Shattered.

WILKINS , MERRY MEN.

(Australian Press Assn.—United Service.)

(Received 10.30 a.m.)

LONDON, January 2

In a copyright message from Deception Island, in the Antarctic, Sir Hubert Wilkins. the aviator-explorer, gives an account of his party's New Year celebrations.

He says: "Nowhere in the universe rang out the old and rang in the New Year more cheerfully than this cosmopolitan outpost of industry.

"The clanging of bells, grenade detona-

tions, the blowing of steam whistles, the booming of four-inch harpooning guns, and the rattle of rifle and revolver fire interrupted the feast at midnight.

"The boom of the whaling guns stirred millions of birds, our constant companions, and the revelry continued all night. "There is still much work to be done but whether we continue immediately depends on the whims of the weather." MAWSON AGAIN. Antarctic Expedition In Prospect. USING SCOTT'S DISCOVEBY. (United Service.) (Received 10 a.m.) LONDON, January 2. Sir Douglas Mawson's forthcoming journey to England is definitely in connection with an Antarctic expedition. Moreover there is every possibility that he will secure Scott's ship the Discovery. British Government officials have little to say on the matter, but it was admitted to-day that certain negotiations had been going on. It is understood these were a continuance of those commenced many months ago when it was first indicated that Sir Douglas Mawson desired to organise an expedition. The position seems to have been carried considerably further.
