Tcheka Lifts Queen's Plate.

Sir Mond was the only defection from the Queen's Plate, the opening event of the meeting. Cashier (£2437) was a warm favourite, with Gold Money ( £1013) and Arikitoa ( £887) also well backed. Lido, who ran third, carried ! £4l onjy. At the start Gold Money and Big Berths failed tb begin smartly, and Tcheka was first out from Amor, Arikitoa, Camp Prince, Saucy Lass and Lido. When the field had gone four furlongs Lido was in the lead with Tcheka, Cashier, Kinross and Gold Money following, and the order into the straight was Lido, Tcheka, Cashier, Gold Money, Kinross and Amor. In a good finish Tcheka just lasted long enough to beat Gold Money by a head with Lido, two and a-half lengttis away. Amor was fourth, then came Kinross, Briar Root, Komak, Modest Boy, Cashier and Arikitoa. Waikato Juvenile Still Undefeated. Awamutu and Count Palatine failed to parade for the Great Northern Foal Stakes, for which the public made Supremacy favourite, entrusting him with £2875, next in request being Honour ( £2817) and Ceremony ( £1486). The start was a good one, and at the five-furlong post Speedlight was in charge from Ceremony, Carl Idem and Honour, with Supremacy next, while Gold Tinge and Clopton were last. Ceremony was in front at the half-mile post, followed by Speedlight, with Supremacy three lengths away, while Honour headed the rest, who were bunched. Ceremony and Speedlight were on terms as they turned for home, with Supremacy following and Honour four lengths away, while Gold Tinge was coming fast on the outside. Supremacy took charge half-way down the straight and went on to win by two lengths from Honour, who beat Ceremony by a length. Speedlight was fourth, then came Imperial Prince, Gold Tinge, Clopton and Carl Idem. A Big Field. * Bombarder, Bulolo, High Falutin', Hone Heke, Te Money, Appellant, Becalmed, Shot Silk and L'ybcle were withdrawn from the Robinson Handicap. Storm Fiend (£1479), Philippic (£1304), and Vallar li88ti) were best supported when the machine closed, while Mussie, who ran second, carried £590. Vallar was soon iji front from Arihana, Bannock, Winsome Boy, Miss Myrtle, Air King, Footpad and Palmares, and so they arced along the back. Cossing the top the order was Vallar, Arihana, Footpad, Air King, Mussie, Bannock and Eager Bose, racing as named. Vallar turned for home first from Arihana, Eager Bose, Air King, Mussie and War Officer, and went on to win comfortably by a length and threequarters from Mussie, who beat War Officer by three-quarters of a length. Eager Kose was fourth, then came Arihana, Good Boy, Arikitoa, Palmares, Philippic, Miss Myrtle and Bnnnock. The Cup. A field of twelve well-conditioned horses went to the post for the Auckland Cup, the principal race on the programme, for which the withdrawals were Goshawk, Vertigern, Eh Timi and Thursby. When the machine closed Count Cavour (£3787), Oratrix (£3230), and Laughing Prince (£2476) were the popular fancies, while Corinax, the winner, carried £1326. When the field had fairly settled down Corinax was in charge from Papatu, with Tidal and Transformer last. Passing the four furlong post Papatu and Corinax were together, followed by Catkin and Talisker, who were racing on4'_terma with Desert Glow, Laughing Prince, Mask and Oratrix next, T : dal and Transformer being still in th* rear. Passing the six furlong post Catkin drew out a couple of lengths clear of Corinax, and he led into the straight from the lastnamed, with Laughing Prince two lengths further back, followed by Count Cavour, Papatu and Hoylake. Laughing Prince challenged over the last 100 yards, but failed to reach Corinax by three-quarters of a length, with Catkin, who was tiring, two lengths away. Count Cavour was fourth, next to finish being Hoylake, Talisker, Desert Glow, Oratrix, Papatu, Mask, and Transformer, and Tidal a long way back last. , An Inquiry. In connection with the Bay of Islands Racing Club's meeting to be held at Kawakawa on January 19, .arrangements have been made for the steamer, Clansman, to leave Auckland , for Opua on Friday night (January 18), returning from Opua on the following night. This will enable racegoers to make the trip with the loss of only one day. Horses for the meeting could also go by the Clansman, as there will be a train connection between Opua and Kawakawa.
