"REALLY BAD CASE"
AGENT STEALS DEPOSITS.
EARNINGS SPENT ON WOMEN.
SENTENCE OF IMPRISONMENT,
(By Telegraph.—Press Association.)
WELLINGTON, this day.
On each of nine charges of fraudulently converting to his own use sums received as deposits on the sale of house property, James David Martin Mclntyre, aged 46, a land agent, was sentenced to-day by Mr. Justice MacGregor to two years' imprisonment, the terms to be concurrent.
The Crown Prosecutor eaid the total amount involved was £364, and he understood Mclntyre's private debts amounted to about £5000. He thought he was justified in saying it was a really bad case of its kind. He had been in a position of trust and for a considerable time had been converting deposits to his own use. In addition, he had been sued in the Magistrates' Court. /*Finally, he was unable to get any more deposits, as people found they could not trust him.
Counsel interrupted that that was not correct.
The Crown Prosecutor said that bank statements showed that in twelve months up to last October about £5000 passed through Mclntyre's trust account, oi which about £2645 had been drawn as commission. Mclntyre must have been spending money at a very extravagant rate.
In sentencing accused his Honor mentioned the probation report, which said a large amount of prisoner's earnings had been spent on women. That probably accounted to some extent for the position in which prisoner found himself.
