URGENT LEGISLATION.
TO AVOID FEBRUARY SESSION WORK FOR THE UNEMPLOYED. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, this day. Sir Joseph Ward stated this afternoon that the urgent legislation which he proposes to ask Parliament to pass during the present short session, to obviate calling Parliament together again in February, will be to give authority for making financial arrangements so as not to delay inauguration of the most important parts of the policy which he put before the public during the election campaign. Amongst other things, that policy will ensure work for the unemployed, especially during the winter months. This is a matter of such importance, he said, that it ought to be assented to by all members of the House. CURTAILING THE DEBATE. POSSIBILITIES DISCUSSED. (By Telegraph.—Parliamentary Reporter.) WELLINGTON, this day. Efforts to curtail the no-confidence debate in the House of Representatives have failed so far, because the Government desires to have the right to four speeches. As it is pointed out, if all party leaders speak there will be at least two Oppositionists. While two of the Government members, as mover and seconder of the Address-in-Reply will generally avoid controversy, the Labour party will not make arrangements on the subject. It is expected that Sir Joseph Ward will in any case shorten his speech, and, under the special circumstances of the King's illness, avoid ventures into ordinary party politics.
