SYDNEY YELLOW CABS.
REDUCTION IN STAFF.
150 MEN DISMISSED
SYDNEY, December 1
More than 150 men employed in Sydney by Yellow Cabs of Australia, Ltd.. received notice of dismissal when they reported for duty yesterday. This action was" taken by Ihe company because of the slackness of trade. About 100 taxi-cabs were withdrawn from service. The majority of the men dismissed were cab dri.-ers, and the remainder were garage employees, who*? work was dependent on the number of cubs on the road. Recently the company asked the drivers to consider a proposal that they should accept a reduction in the wages from £u per week to £4 10/, as an alternative to a reduction of the staff. A ballot was taken on the question, with the result that the men refused to consider the proposed reduction in wages. "There are far too many cabs on the road for the amount of business offering," said Mr. Gent. "In fact, if the number of taxis plying for.hire in Sydney were halved, there would be sufficient to cope with the business offering. Only by this reduction can companies and individual owners hope for satisfactory returns." Mr. Gent said that the notices of dismissal took effect immediately they were served, in compliance with the company's agreement with its employees.
