Opening Favourite Never Sighted. Land Measure and Viburnum were defections from the Melrose Maiden Stakes, the opening event on the programme. Beclamed was favourite, carrying £645, with Jolly Money and Princess Rain, who were coupled (£509) and Red Lion (£232) next in demands. Taneriri, the second horse, carried £168. The favourite was not sighted during the race, but Jolly Money was never furtßer back than third, and took charge entering the straight, but had to be ridden out to beat Taneriri. Prince Val and Armenia were badly left, and Aggressive was first out, attended by Josie Melville. Before they had gone far both lost their positions, and Footpad took up the running from Red Lion, with Justify next. Justify was in front at the half-mile post, with Footpad, Jolly Money, Red Lion, Black Maire, Good Boy and Just Nell following. Footpad faded out, and Justify led across the top from Jolly Money, Red Lion, Black Maire, Good Boy and Just Nell. Princess Rain put in a good run at this stage, and was third to Jolly Money and Justify as they turned into the straight. In the run home Taneriri pat in a great run from a long way back, but failed to reach Jolly Money, who wae being hard ridden, by a length, with Black Maire three-quarters of a length away. Good Boy was fourth and then came Justify, Sir Mond, B;m nock, Princess Rain and Just Nell. Another Favourite Beaten. Whaka King and Big Bertha wm , withdrawn from the Tiri High weight. Master Clements was soon in front from Master Lu, Abbott's Delight. Lord Abbey and Glena Boy, but as they went along the back the order was Master Clements, Abbott's Delight, Lord Abbey, Moy Hall, Potoanui and Glena Bay, and there was no alteration as they raced across the top, where Lord Abbey and Moy Hall took charge with Pekatahi, Potoanui, and Master Lu handy. Before the straight was reached Wenday put in a fast run, and was up with Moy Hall and Lord Abbey aa they came into the straight, where Wenday forged ahead and won by a length from Moy Hall, with Bizarro, who finished fast, half alength away. Glena Bay was fourth, followed by Royalform, Charitaine, Pouri and Rahepoto. After the Highweight Handicap L. Coleman, the rider of Master Clements, was suspended for the remainder of thu meeting for crossing Lord Abbey. J. Sharkey, who rode Potoanui, was also cautioned for hie handling of that horse.

Crossing the top Awarere was three lengths ahead of Flying Juliet, with Macroom about the same distance away, with The Lamb, Cynthia N. and Serang, who had made up a lot of ground, following. Transformer had £474 invested on his number and Thursby £123. It was a good start, and the field ran bunched for the first furlong, with Thursby soon tailed off. Passing the stand Golden Wedding had charge from Desert Glow, Lβ Choucas, Papatu, Mint Leaf and Tinokoa, with Corinax and Royal Doulton last. Along the back Seatown put in a run and headed Desert Glow, both showing the way to Le Choucas, Tinokoa, Transformer, Thursby and Royal Doulton, who had made up a lot of leeway, but got knocked back again at this stage. Corinax was still tailing the field. Transformer went to the front crossing the top, with Thursby moving up fast, and the order into the straight was Transformer, Thureby, Tinokoa, Mint Leaf, Seatown and Desert Glow. Lγ Choacas fell as the field left the buck stretch and was approaching the top. Transformer went on to win by a length and a-half from Thursby, who beat Tinokoa by two length*.
