OPENING WOOL SALES.
(By Telegraph—Special to "Star.")
WELLINGTON, this day.
The New Zealand wool aales will open with the Wellington auctions on Friday, when 7775 bales are to be submitted, a drop of 1200 bales compared with last year, when 9002 bales were sold at an average of 15.639 d per ib. Until a few days ago the indications were for an even lighter offering. That is not the case, as wet weather has interfered with shearing. There has 'been a rush of wool during the latft few days, though not equal to the opening supply in 1027. There is little inclination to prophesy Friday's prices, though brokers do not expect them to equal last season's closing rates. There are - indications of a firmer tone in the English market, whidi it is hoped will be reflected here.
One broker points out that this week's sale should _ not be regarded as a very definite indication of seasonal prospects, as bad weather has prevented the larger stations from making the usual progress with their cKpe. The result will be that the bulk of the offering is of fanners' clips, not the big staple lines on which more relianoe can be placed for predicting future prices. The wool to hand is well and evenly growii, and light in condition.
