DEPOSITS OF £10.
PUT UP BY ALL CANDIDATES.
TWENTY-FIVE FORFEITED
nr 1925.
THE NUMBER OF VOTES REQUIRED
Twenty-five candidates at the last general election forfeited their deposits of £10. With nomination each candidate has to deposit with the returning officer the sura of £10, and this amount is retained by the State if the candidate polls less than 25 per cent of the total number of votes recorded in favour of the successful candidate. At every election there are some forfeited deposits, but as a rule the number is small.
There were more forfeits than usual at the last general election, as there was an overwhelming majority of votes recorded for the then new Prime Minister, the election slogan in 1925 being "Coates and Confidence." This cry appealed to the imagination of the people, and swayed thousands of votes throughout the Dominion.
