SOCIAL GATHERINGS.

A surprise party in the form of a Bovelty gift evening wae given te Miss Marjorie Dingle at her home in Takapuna, last Saturday evening, by a party of her young friends, in view' of her approaching marriage. A very enjoyable time was spent in dances, competitions and games. Miss Marjorie Dingle, who wore Alice blue georgette, with *ilver and floral dceoratione was the recipient of many useful and pretty gifts. * *

Archdeacon and Mre. Kempthorne celebrated their golden wedding at Kelson on Wednesday. They were marTied by the late Bishop Suter on November 7, 1878, in the Bishopdale Chapel, the first marriage which took place there. The occasion was celebrated in the chapel by Holy Communion, at which Archdeacon Kempthorne and members of their family and a few personal friends were present. The celebrant was the Bishop of Nelson, assisted by Canon Wimberley (son-in-law of Archdeacon and Mrs. Kempthorne). The Bishop, in the course of a brief address, referred to the fact that two of Archdeacon Kempthorne's eons were serving as clergymen in important positions in the North Island, and another was the missionary Bishop of Polynesia.

Headings of Norman McKinnell's one•ct play, "The Bishop's Candlesticks;" and A. A. Milne's three-act comedy, "Belinda," were given by a number of friends at Mrs. Russell-Wood's home in Mount Street, on Monday evening. The occasion was the final session of the season by these readers, who have found and given much pleasure with this form of entertainment during the winter. Mr. P. C. Garrett spoke in eulogistic terms of the hospitality of Mis. Russell-Wood and Mr. W. RussellWood, and on behalf of the Teaders Mies Edna Thomas handed Mrs. Russell-Wood a beautiful bouquet. The parts in "The Bishop's Candlesticks" were read by the following: The convict, Mr. P. C. Garrett; the bishop, Mr. W. Esmond Sharp; Dersome, Miss £. Thomas; Marie, Miss Thelma Judge; sergeant of gendarmes, Mr. RussellWood. In "Belinda," the name part was read by Miss Hope Asher; Delia (her daughter), Miss Thelma Judge; Harold Baxton, Mr. Russell-Wood; Claude Devinish, Mr. R, Bowie; John Tremayne, Mr. Garrett, and Betty (the maid), by Mrs. I. S. Xaing.

A final social for the season was held T>y members of the Toy Dog Club at the Click Clack Cabaret last evening. Dancing provided enjoyable entertainment, and songs were sung by Miss Lingard, Miss L. Bailey, Miss Matthews, Mrs. McLiver, Mrs. Asher, Mrs. Nodder, Mr. Baxter and Mr. Marshall. An interesting talk on the show points of Pomeranians, given by Mr. J. W. Cowley, -was much appreciated. On arrival the guests were received by Mr. and Mrs. G.'Herbert, the latter wearing a frock of deep blue marocain with embroidered ehawl. Among those who were present were: Mrs. J. W. Cowley, wearing pale cyclamen georgette beaded in sequins and crystal; Mrs. Hunt, amethyst georgette; Mrs. Whyman, black georgette heavily beaded in silver; Mrs. Marshall, pink georgette and lace; Mrs. Jamieson, "black ring velvet; Mr*. Ireland, pale pink lace frock; Mrs. Nodder, pink georgette and cream lace; Mrs. Blair, black georgette, sequinned; Mrs. McLiver, rose crepe de chine and cream lace; Mrs. Asher, embroidered georgette j Mrs. MeGew, cream lace over blue; Mrs. Campi, black georgette; Mrs. Brown, black georgette; Mrs. Summerhayes, deep blue crepe de chine; Mrs. Braithwaite, blue georgette; Miss Marshall, cherry coloured taffeta; Miss Newman, bine and •ilver froek; Miss J.
