ST. GEORGE'S CLUB
COATES CUP TRIAL FOURS.
St. George's Rowing Club opened their l!>2S-20 season on Saturday with a set of trial fours for trophies and a cup presented by Sir James Coates, patron of the elub. The course was from Orakei. inside the embankment, to the city end of the reclamation over the full mile. Despite the heavy nortli-west wind water conditions were fair, and some spirited contests were witnessed ia the two neats and the final. The tirst heat was rowed In heavy rain. Following arc the results:— First Heat.—C. D'Authreau, V. Coste, V. Morton, V. Dunne, H. Lauder (cox), v. W. IC. Woolliouse, S. Ilislop, F. S. Wynyard, K. Auger, Harkwell (cox). Won by D'Authreau by two lengths. Both crews hit the water together in a good start. When they had gone about a couple of hundred yards Woolhouse's bow lost his seat. Despite this handicap bis crew had about a length and a-half's advantage to the halfway mark. Here D'Autbreau's crew drew level. Putting on a spurt Woolliouse again took the lead and then D'Authreau challenged, and went on to win a good race by two lengths. Second Heat.—M. Simons, W. Carr, F. Wilson, E. Auger. Christoff (cox), v. Hargreaves, D. R. McGregor. T. Olson, P. Barry Hart well (cox). Won by Simons by a length and a-half. This was another good race, iu which both crews were all out from the start. There was little difference between them till halfway was reached. Here Hargreaves took the lead for a couple of hundred yards, when Simons came at him. It was a good "go" to t lie post, Simons gradually drawing awav to get the decision by a length and a-half.
Final.—Crews stroked by D'Authreau and Simons competed in the final, which was won by D'Authreau by a length. The best race of the day. Both crews got away to an excellent start, which was by mutual consent. They settled down early in the race, rowing well together and keeping a perfect length. For the first quarter-mile there was little between thom. Then D'Authreau gained a slight advantage. Simons called upon his men, who responded gamely, and the gap between the crews was decreased. Once again the leading crew drew further ahead, and over the last stretch spirited rowing was the order. D'Authreau called on his men for a final dozen and he went on to win all out by a length. The winning crew was:—C. D'Authreau, V. Coote, V. Morton and V. Dunne. An interesting feature of the win was that Val Dunne, the captain of the club and veteran oarsman of the shed, was in the winning crew for the third time since Sir James Coates presented the cup. Dunne was No. 3 in the crew, which won the race in 1903, stroke in the 1923 winning crew, and on Saturday he was bow —a most creditable record.
