DIVINE POWER.
URGE OF MRS. PATERSON. MEETING AT POINT CHEVALIER. "I believe I was meant.to stand, and there is a divine < power at the back of me," declared Mrs. L. v Paterson, Independent Labour candidate for Grey Lynn, in addressing an indulgent audience of about 100 in Dignan Road, Point Chevalier, last evening. The candidate added that she was standing in the interests of women, and disabused the impression that she had entered the campaign for the purpose of splitting the Labour vote. She had a petition containing 300 signatures asking her to stand. Mrs. Paterson spoke of the circumstances that had- created unemployment and the introduction of doss houses and soup kitchens. There was no need for starvation in this country, she- said,, and the existing conditions a positive disgrace. Mrs. Paterson championed. herself as the pioneer woman in the Labour movement, and said that Mrs. Maguire and Miss Melville did not know what the working women had to go through. She was not out for self-glorification,, but she spoke her mind even if she got six months for it. . She. was earnest, and sincere and if returned would endeavour to get better-conditions for the working class women. She stood four square for food, clothing and shelter.
