MAUNGATAPERE ROAD.

ASPHALTING SCHEME.

COUNTY COUNCIL FAVOURABLE. (By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) WHANGAREI, this day. A scheme for asphalting the Wha-ngarei-Maungatapere highway was submitted by Mr. J. H. Hayward, of Maunu, at the County Council meeting this morning. He estimated the cost at £16,000, spread over three years. The chairman of the district council said he considered the road the most important mentioned in the council's original scheme for improving roads adjacent to the borough. The Highways Board would contribute £4000 for three years. He proposed that the county contribute £800, and the Maunu riding the balance, £3200, by striking a special rate.

Some councillors considered Hikurangi the most important highway, but it was pointed out that the Maungatapere Road served as an arterial road without an adjacent railway, and tapped the whole of fertile Mangakahia.

Discussion of the scheme was deferred until next meeting, to allow the full council to be present.
