HOMEWARD BOUND.

A DAY AT WHANGAREI.

GUMLAND AND CEMENT MAKING

(By Telegraph.—Special to "Star.") WHANGAREI, this day. Piloted by Mr. A. R. Crane, actingpresident of the Whangarei Chamber of Commerce, who accompanied them on their drive through Hokianga County, the members of the commerce train party reached Whangarei shortly after seven o'clock this morning on the last stage of their tour of nine days though the Auckland province. They were met by the Mayor, Mr. L. J. Brake, and after breakfast at the Commercial and Settlers Hotels, they were driven out to Puwera State demonstration farm, where Mr. C. J. Hamblyn, instructor in agriculture for the North Auckland district, explained the methods adopted in bringing gumland into use for dairy farming.

Subsequently the party visited the Portland cement works, and were given a demonstration of the interesting processes in the manufacture of cement, their guide being Mr. T. H. Wilson. The party had an enjoyable run back to town bv launA.

This afternoon's programme includes a drive out to Kamo and. the surrounding district, and afternoon tea at the hot springs. The party will this evening be the guests of the local bodies and the Chamber of Commerce at an official dinner to be held in the Settlers Hotel, at which the valedictory speeches will be made.

When the commerce train reaches Auckland at 7.30 p.m. to-morrow, it will have travelled over 1000 miles with complete success. The time-table has been admirably adhered to, anil the comfort of the party of 80 has been most completely considered.
