ARMISTICE MEDAL.

No Jingo Or Vindictive Air In

Memorial.

FIRST IN HISTORY

(British Official Wireless.)

(Received 11.30 a.m.)

RUGBY, November 2.

The medal struck by the Royal Mint to commemorate the Armistice will be in two sizes. There will be a large silver medal three inches in diameter which will be sold at 30/, and a large bronze medal of the same size at 10/. There will also be a small bronze medal H inches in diameter sold at 1/9. The design of the medal has been chosen afte'r competition between several wellknown medallists. An official of the Mint says: "We have simply followed the example of other countries which fought in the war. As they had a commemorative medal and we had not we thought the tenth anniversary of the Armistice was a fittin" opportunity to issue one. It is new in history. Never before has such a medal been struck by the Mint after any war. "The Government was anxious that there should not be any jingo or vindictive air about the medal, and the designer has planned it accordingly. The sheathed sword and the broken shackles of war were suggested by the great phrase that Lord Oxford uttered when Britain entered the war: "We shall not sheath the sword until justice has been done.'" The proceeds of the sales will be devoted to covering the cost of manufacture of the medals. If there is any surplus it will go back to the Government.
