MANAWATU AFFECTED.

FOXTOW XJAI3 UMUER WATER.

" GORGE RAILWAY BLOCKED. * —— j (By Telegraph—Frees Association.)' ' PALMERSTON N., this day. The Toads in the vicinity of Rangiotu were flooded to-day, owing to heavy Tains and the backing up of the Orona River from the Manawatu River. Highway* in other parts of the district are also Inundated owing to the heavy rains causing the flooding of various waterways. The settlers had ample warning of , a flood and most of them removed their stock to safe levels. Between Tiakitabuna and RangSotu, it was reported this morning, ten feet of water covers the roadway. The Foxton railway line is under water from Tiakitahuna to Rangiotu, and train services are disorganised. ' The position around Rangiotu would have been worse but for the water flowing into the Taonui swamp. The Manawatu i River at mid-day was dropping slightly, and the flood waters also. A heavy slip came down in the Manawatu Gorge on the railway line, and delayed early-morning trains to Hawke's Bay and Wairarapa. Trains from Wairarapa were cancelled. The slip was removed by 11 o'clock to-day, enabling trains from this end to get through the Gorge, but the earth has since fallen again, and the line is now blocked.
