NEW GUM INDUSTRY.
UTILISATION OF LOGS. DISSOLVED IST ALCOHOL. (By Telegraph.—Special to "Star.") ~ DARGAVILLE, this day. ■ At Babylon, a few miles out from Dargaville, yesterday afternoon, members of the commerce train p;..\ - were shown .over a new factory established for the purpose of extracting gum from roots and discarded logs of kauri trees. This industry was only recently established by A. C. McArthur and Co., the first shipment having been sent to England three weeks ago. The visitors were shown an interesting process bv which the wood is pulverised and then dissolved in alcohol. The liquid gum k then separated from the alcohol. The introduction of this process, as used in America, is expected to have an important bearing on the gum industry in Kaihu Valley. The product is used for [the, making of varnishes,.
