WORTHLESS CHEQUES CASHED.
HOTELKEEPER LOSES £90. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) DUNEDIN. Wednesday. John Wilfred Lawson, a farm labourer, came to Dunedin some time ago and deposited £11 in a bank. He returned a few days later and drew a cheque for £8, which he presented to the barman of an hotel. At the same time he produced a deposit slip for £80, which he showed to the barman, whom he satisfied that he was in funds. The barman got the licensee to cash the cheque.
Two days later Lawson went to the hotel again, and presented a cheque for £10 to the licensee's daughter, saying that the licensee had said that she was to cash it. She did so.
To-day in the Police Court, Lawson was sentenced to twelve months' imprisonment for fraud.
