OVER THE ALPS.
New Railway Meant For War Turned To Commerce.
FRANCE AND ITALY,
(Australian and N.Z. Press Association.) (Received 12 noon.)
PARIS, October 30.
International importance attaches to the inauguration of the new railway from Nice to Coni, reducing the distance from Nice to Turin by 60 miles. The new line crosses the Alps and includes tunnels totalling fifteen miles in length. M. Tardieu, in opening the line, pointed out that it was originally planned for military purposes, but would bo used for peaceful commerce. He hoped it would help France and Italy to know each other better.
