The aged gelding Bannock was given a lesson over the pony hurdles at Ellerslie yesterday morning, and gave a very creditable exhibition, jumping the obstacles with plenty of confidence for a novice. Papatu is to be ridden by H. Wiggins in the Dargaville Cup. This will mean that the Romeo gelding is sure to be better supported on that account, as he has rarely been out of the money whenever Wiggins has ridden him on previous occasions. Quineoma, who has failed to fulfil the early promise he displayed as a hurdle proposition, may make amends in the Kaihu Hurdles at Avondale to-morrow. The small field will be to his advantage, and. taken all round, his prospects appear good. Sergent, who continues to do plenty of serviceable work at Ellerslie, will have his next run at the Whangarei meeting early in November. He has been sprinted several times during the last couple of weeks, putting plenty of dash into his work, and is nice and forward in condition.

Without doing anything outstanding in the way of fast jralloping, Eager Rose has been shaping nicely in her work and is very forward in condition. She will be meeting a moderate lot at the Dargaville meeting to-morrow, and should do a lot better than she has done in her last few outings in public.

The maiden candidate Ponticus has improved in condition since coming to Ellerslie, and is showing some pace in his recent track tasks. He was raced a good deal last season, when his best effort was a third to Fiery Lad and Wee Marble in the Awakino Handicap at Dargaville.

After doing most of her racing on the flat during the last few months, Hiss Alma will take on hurdle racing at Avondale to-morrow. She was given a trial over four schooling hurdles at Ellerslic yesterday morning, and apart from making a faulty jump at the last fence, her display was good.

After his success in the Bollard Memorial at the Waikato Hunt meeting. Ladv's Boy is likely to come in for good support in the Avoca Handicap to-morrow. The Some Boy 11. gelding appears to have freshened up, and put plenty of dash into a sprinting task at headquarters yesterday morning.

The Ellerslie trainer T. R. Geonze has worked a big improvement in Baby Bun, and the little bay mare is steadily gaining in condition. She has been sprinted on several occasions recently, and promises to come back to her best form again. Baby Bun may be given a race on the concluding day of the Dargavillo meeting.

The Luculhis filly Lido will make her first appearance with the colours up at Avondale to-morrow, where she will contest the first division of the Maiden Plate. Lido, who comes from a successful racing family, has shown her ability to gallop on the track, and with racing experience should do well later on.

Lord Abbey is progressing nicely in his schooling* efforts under P. Conway's <ntidance at headquarters, and when he has had more experience promises to make good as a hurdle proposition. H» has been entered for both hurdle races at the Whangarei meeting, and providing he goes on the right way will have his ■ nitial race over the obstacles at thaf fixture.

Recent track form points to War Officer "iving a good account of himself in the Awakino Handicap to-morrow. His second to Storm Fiend in the Swanson Handicap at the Avondale meeting was a useful performance, while he will be meeting a weaker field in the A wakino Handicap, which is run over a similar distance. War Officer registered a sound gallop over six furlongs at Ellerslie yesterdav morning, and if he runs up to it he is sure to be in the money.

During the latter part of last season Ohinemuri displayed good form. She won several decent hack races, and finished up bv scoring a victory in the King George Handicap nt the Auckland winter meeting, in which event she defeated a number of good performers. Ohinemuri claims an engagement in the Hobson Handicap at the Dargaville meeting to-morrow, and although she has failed to race up to form in her last few starts she may soon do better.

Haze had his first'start this season at the Banks Peninsula meeting, when he finished second to Sarnia. This horse has been fairly unlucky during his racing career. He did not sport silk till he was three years old. and finished second on six occasions out of eight starts. In the following season he ran two seconds in seven starts, but it was not till he was a five-year-old that he broke his maiden status by winning the Trial Stakes at Riecarton, which is his only victory. He was in six other races that season. He has not raced since Easter. 1927, till he was saddled up on Monday.

A practical horseman who saw Gold Tinge win in Sydney will not have it that those at Trent-ham saw the colt at anything approaching his best (says a C'hristchurch writer). He has sketched out the ordeal that was set the two-year-old. Gold Tinge left his home in the South Island on September 12. and was shipped in Wellington on September 14. arriving at Sydney on September IS. Less than a fortnight later —on October I—he ran in the Breeders' Plate and won. He was shipped again to New Zealand on October 5, and arrived late in Wellington after a bad trip, on tho 9th. On the 20th, or eleven days later, he was asked to race, a task that would have troubled many older horses. H? had been given little work subsequent to his arrival, and in two half-mile sprints last week shaped indifferently. It was thought that he would be right in a race, but this proved wroug. In point of fact, it is now quite obvious that the travelling had found him out, and he may not be freshened up in time for the Welcome r "akes at Riccarton. A colt who could win the Breeders' Plate pulling up in (50is certainly did i not show that form when finishing out 'of a place iu the Wellesley Stakes.

Te Atiawa has been scratched for the Avoca Handicap to be run at the Dargaville meeting to-morrow. Tea Time has been scratched for all engagements.
