DEFECTIVES BILL.
BY EUGENICS SOCIETY. Sterilisation As Only Cure For u Serious Evil." BRITISH PBOPOSAL. (ÜBlted Service.) (Received 0.30 a.m.) LONDON, October 26. It is understood that the Eugenics Society has drafted, for presentation to Parliament, a bill empowering the sterilisation of mental defectives at the instance of the local authority under the Mental Deficiency Act subject to the approval of the Minister of Health, the Board of Control for Defectives, and the parent, the last* named being dispensable where the defective is legally certified. Sir William Arbuthnot Lane, the eminent surgeon, declares that almost the entire medical profession and the majority of thinking people will suppoit the bill. Sterilisation, he says, is the only core for a serious evil. The continuance of families in mental defectives is utterly unjustifiable.
