N.Z. MISSIONARY.
HELD BY CHINESE. Miss Tobin's Capture By Yellow Bandits. RELEASE EFFORTS FAIL. (Australian Press Assn.—United Service.) (Received 12 noon.) LONDON, October 26. The Rev. C. J. Blanchett, the London Missionary Society's secretary at Canton, writes describing the capture of Misses Tobin and Watkins on September 24 by Chinese bandits while proceeding up the Fu River with an American missionary named Lowe, and an armed guard. Misses Tobin and Watkins were outstripped by Lowe and moored while the boatmen ate their evening meal of rice. Suddenly, at five minutes past four, several men scrambled aboard and covered the women with rifles. They ransacked the boat and hurried the women to the hillside, compelling Miss Watkins to hide her conspicuous, dress with a heavy coat. She lagged behind exhausted and the bandits replaced the coat with a lighter stolen dress. She gave the coat to. Miss Tobin and was left behind. Wearied out she found her way to the riverside and rejoined Lowe. Miss Tobin is still unreleased despite negotiations. •
