MR. GEORGE N. HETET.
PIONEER OF KING COUNTRY.
The death occurred in Tc Kuiti on Thursday of Mr. George N. Hetet, one of the oldest of the surviving Maoris who are associated with the early histhe North Island, and especially the King Country. Mr. Hetet was the head of one of the families who were the founders of Te Kuiti and Otoronhanga. His father was a Frenchman, M. Louis Hetet, who cam* to New Zealand in 1834 in charge of a whaling expedition. He afterwards n> turned to France, and brought out sheep, cattle and wheat, and started farming here. He married Rangi Tuatohl, a. chieftainess of the Maniapoto and there were four children, Mr. George Hetet being the eldest and the last swviror.
Mr. Hetet, who was 84, has about 200 descendants, including 86 grandchildren, 105 great-grandchildren and 11 great-great-grandchildren. During the Great War 34 of his descendants fought with the Now Zealand forces.
A tangi is being held in Te Kuiti pa, where natives from all parts of the North Island are assembled.
