FORMER DARGAVTLLE RESIDENT.

One who was formerly well known it He Northern Wairoa, Mr. William John Brown, died on Saturday at his hone, Liverpool Street, Epsom. Mr. Brown was born at Onehnnga in 1861, and since lw was a young man had been in the timber industry, often working bushes in the I Northern Wairoa. In 1575, with his brother, he started business as Brown Brothers and Co. The firm put through some big contracts for Brown Campbell and Co., and also the Kauri Timber Co. When his brother died, Mr. Brown retired for a time from the timber business, and took up a farm of 400 acres on the Wairoa River. Three years later he joined Finlayson Brothers, once mora carrying out bush contracts. He retired about fifteen years ago, and has since lned at Epsom. Mr. Brown belonged to the Order of Freemasons, being a member of Lodge St. George ISOI E.C. He was also a well-known oarsman in his younger days, and a member of the winning crew in a number of whaleboai races. He was also interested in racing and owned several winners, one of his horses having won the Great Northern, deceased is survived by his wife, a daughter of the late Captain Stanawav. of lok a tea.
