TRAFFIC CONTROL

COLOURED LIGHT SYSTEM

EXPERIMENT IN CAPITAL.

(By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.)

WELLINGTON, Sunday.

Traffic is becoming so dense at the knsy street junctions of Wellington that some system of control other than police pointsmen is considered to be overdue by those in authority. The matter was brought before the City Council a few months ago, when it was decided that a coloured electric light signal system should be installed for experimental purposes. The traffic department, working in with the tramways department, has been busy during the last week installing the system at the Courtenay Place (east) junction, where seven streets converge, and where there is very heavy traffic at certain hours of the day. > Seven sets of lights—red, amber, and ipreen—are being installed in all, so that the traffic from each street will come under control. These lights,, which way be worked either by hand or automatically, will have the following meaning to all classes of traffic: Red, stop; green, go; amber, the warning that the light is about to change, either from red to green or vice versa.

The installation will be worked manually until such time as it is deemed expedient to resort to an automaticallytimed arrangement.
