GOVERNMENT LABOUR BUREAU.
As one of the many who have daily applied at the exchange for employment, the Depart* ment's weekly returns are very interesting. Personally I have applied almost every d*y» morning and afternoon, for a very long period j a H the encouragement one gets is, "Nothing in," or '"Bov for a farm." There seems to Ibe no method in allocating the work. S® notice is given as to when there is any, and it is a case of "Johnny on the spot gets the job." I have seen many times men register and get work at onee. According to figure® there are a ronnd 800 registered, and a fine thing it would be if the whole army of them had to hang about in that pokey little waiting room. Soma system should be brought hi whereby the longest out should be first in, but under the present order some are getting ail and others none. Men are at the Western Springs now who have been at the Domain and on other relief works, while other men cannot get a day. A few days ago a man was applied for at the bureau. Armed with a voucher in a sealed envelope he went forth, and his job was to carry a parcel. He got two shillings for it. Would the Department return this as a man placed in emplovaient? LABOURER.
