COMPANIONS IN TROUBLE.
THEFT AT HELENS VILLE. EMPTY BOTTLES TAKEN. Charged with having stolen bottles, a coat and scrap brass, to a total value of 4/, two young married men, Horatio Henry Nelson (32) and William Throll ("29), appeared at the Police Court this morning before Mr. F. K. Hunt, S.M. Throll was also charged with attempting to steal a copper boiler valued at £2 and with committing mischief and wilfully damaging the copper stand to the extent of 25/. Chief Dctective Hammond said the two men were dealers and travelled around in a truck collecting bottles and other materials. They had stolen several empty bottles, the property of Isabella Sellars, of Helensville, and Throll attempted to take the copper boiler. Both men had been in New Zealand for about two years and owned the truck between them. Nelson said from the dock that the theft was a thoughtless one. Mr. Hunt: No, it was not. A fine of 40/ was imposed upon Nelson and £."> upon Throll. Mr. Hunt: Do you want to pay or take it out? Both accused replied that they had no money at present. Nelson said the lorry was out of commission through need of tyres. Mr. Hunt: You had better sell it and pay the debt. "We were simply out of work and trying to get a living," added Nelson. Mr. Hunt: Well, you must not try that way. Throll, besides being fined £3, was ordered to pay 25/ damages.
