PROPOSED BOROUGH.
NEW LYNN DISTRICT. FAVOURABLE REPORT. POLL AT EARLY DATE. A poll of the residents of the New Lynn Town Board is to be taken at an early date with a view to ascertaining whether the majority of the electors are in favour of the district being promoted to the status of a borough with a mayor and councillors. This is the result of a commission appointed to inquire into the question, a petition having been largely signed praying that the borough be constituted. The commissioners who took evidence were Messrs. W. R. McKean, S.M., A. W. A. Sweetman and O. N. Campbell. They have reported favourably upon the proposal, also the inclusion of the Kelston estate in the area which is now under the jurisdiction of the Waitemata County Council. The recommendation of the commission has not so far been gazetted, but as soon as this step is taken the next move will be the taking of a poll. If this is favourable to the proposal the GovernorGeneral will constitute the new borough by proclamation. It is a little unfortunate for the district on account of expense that the poll will not be able to be taken simultaneously with the town board elections on the l!)th of this month, as there is insufficient time for the statutory formalities to be observed. The commission did not recommend that the town board should remain in office unfil next April in the event of the poll being favourable to a borough, and it appears now that there will have to be another election within a few weeks of the town board elections if the poll is successful. The new borough would then go out of office next April, the biennial election for mayor and councillors then being held throughout the Dominion.
