MRS. KNAPP'S CASE.

Convicted Of Larceny Of State Census Funds. 30 DAYS' IMPRISONMENT. (Australian and N.Z. Press Association.) (Received 10 a.m.) ALBANY, September 4. Mrs. Florence 1 Knapp, former Secretary of the State of New York, who was convicted of larceny of the State, census funds, was sentenced to 30 days' gaol. The judge pointed out that, due to the fact that her career was ruined and since she had experienced heavy mental suffering, he considered a light sentence adequate.

Mrs. Florence Knapp's term of office as secretary of the State of New York, expired in 1926. Her salary was £1600 a year. On January 22 last it was reported that the commissioner who had investigated the charges made against Mrs. Knapp of malfeasance while in office, recommended that she be prosecuted. He | alleged that she — 1 had illegally disbursed £23,600, and wasted nearly £10,000 in her administration of the States' census funds. A message received on May 29 stated that Mrs. Knapp was convicted of larceny of the State census funds. The trial took place at Albany, the State capital. The maximum penalty for the offence is imprisonment for 10 years.
